When you choose a preschool for your child, it’s one of the most important decisions you will ever make. Preschool sets the foundation for your child’s future learning. A preschool that allows your child to learn the way he or she learns best while also teaching them foundation skills they’ll build on for the rest of their lives is crucial. Before you choose a preschool for your child, you should consider the following things.

What is the Environment Like?

The environment in which your child learns is extremely important. Some preschool programs, like those in traditional classrooms, teach all the children the same material at the same time at the same pace. Others, like the Montessori classroom, allow your child to carve out his or her own educational path, explore his or her subjects of interest, and advance at his or her unique pace. Before you choose a preschool, make sure you consider in which environment your child would best flourish as this will help you narrow down your options.

What Materials Will Your Child Use?

When you choose a preschool for your child, be sure you can look at the materials your child will be using before making a decision. Are the materials conducive to learning? Are they hands-on? Do they provide adequate representations of how things work in real life (i.e. Are math manipulatives to scale)? Do they allow the child to learn independently and minimize error, or does it require heavy teacher involvement in order for them to be useful?

How is Parent Communication Set Up?

Some preschools allow parents to visit whenever they want. Others, like Montessori schools, prefer you wait for six weeks before visiting the classroom to allow your child to acclimate to the environment and routine first. Some preschools have several parent conferences and open houses per year, while others have only a few. When you choose a preschool, consider the level of involvement you’d like to have in the daily school life of your preschooler and let that help guide you towards the appropriate school.

Can Your Child Flourish?

Of course, the most important thing to consider before you choose a preschool is how your child will flourish there. You know your child better than anyone, and only you can decide what kind of environment will truly let your child unlock his or her potential and embrace it.
